What is Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the measurement of pressure applied to the artery’s walls as blood flows through it. When you get your blood pressure checked, two numbers are used to describe blood pressure: the systolic pressure is the higher and first number and the diastolic pressure which is the lower and second number. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). According to current adult guidelines, blood pressure has three categories: normal, prehypertensive, and hypertensive (Stage 1 and 2).*
What is Normal Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is considered normal and healthy if an individual has a reading of 120/80 mm Hg or less. A reading greater than 140 mm Hg (systolic) or greater than 90 mm Hg (diastolic) would indicate that an individual has high blood pressure (hypertension) and might need to seek out a primary physician for treatment options. For those who fall in the prehypertension category (120-139 systolic or 80-89 diastolic) this indicates an increased risk for developing hypertension.*
